For my second current event project, I researched on a topic, regarding Hutchison-Gilford Progeria Syndrome. Basically, it is one of the rare diseases that causes accelerated aging conditions. The manifestation of the syndrome appear normal when they were just born. And as they got older or reach the age of two to three, the severe symptoms of this disease become apparent in side as well as outside of the infencted ones’ bodies. The external symptoms include atherosclerosis, “an artery wall thickens as the result of a build-up of fatty materials such as cholesterol (Wiki)” to increase in a great extent. Not only the problem on artery, they may have other serious diseases, aroused by the aged intestines or body parts. One of them would be cardiovascular disease. The external symptom is simple fact of children, having distinct appearance; they may be bald due to alopecia, extremely thin and short.
Fortunately, this syndrome had been really rare that there has been only one out of four million babies, contaminated by the genetic disorder, leading to the HGPS ( shortened version of the syndrome). Nonetheless, it does not mean that people should not be caring about minority. Our society must contribute and exert much effort on the research for fully curing this illness by seeing the fact that small number is still potential part of our society as well. The tangible example, making one to realize the clear reason why we should help out them, is the seventeen year old girl, who had a appearance of 70 years old woman. Despite of her fear and suffering from disease, she contributed herself to the work that could plausibly make better society for people like her who had been affected; through the process of allowing people to film a documentary of her and taking the video, persuading people to be more familiar with this disease, she made one step toward her goal. Therefore, our community should be working to aid their lives, not just thanking God for not being one of them! IT is MANDATORY duty to help, rescue, enhance their condition of our living.
